Words of condolence
Think of happy memories. Share them.
I wrote on Facebook to my friend William of Toastmasters:
Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. When I read glowing words about somebody, I think, what a shame I never met them. Now it's too late. So one consoling thought, that you did have the chance to enjoy their friendship and offer them yours.
If you visit a Jewish funeral or the prayers in the evening at the home of the mourners, it is easy to find the right words. The Jewish set phrase in English is I wish you long life.
To find the right word, as the French say, the mot juste, is a skill you can learn. come to a Toastmasters meeting. Most meetings in public venues and online are free to visitors. (Except those in hotels and restaurants.)
